Should You Hire a Moving Company, Moving Broker, or Subcontractor for Your Next Move?

When it’s time to move, you want to choose a company that will be able to transport your furniture and belongings safely to your new destination. The act of moving in itself is stressful, so it’s important to find a moving company that you can trust, and one with a good reputation. Choosing other options such as a moving broker or moving subcontractor are also available, but which method is best for your next move?

Moving Brokers

A moving broker’s job is to look for several moving companies in your area and then select one that best fits your needs. These sales teams then “sell” your move to the actual company. While this might help make the process of looking for a moving company easier, it may not be the ideal choice due to the laws that brokers are held to. If something happens to your household goods and furniture, the broker is not legally responsible for loss or damage. This means that you could stand to lose your personal belongings in the event of theft, an accident, or another mishap. Brokers might be able to find you a great price on a moving company, but they don’t offer the same consumer protections that  a traditional moving company will. These insufficient laws can be a danger to you in cases where something unexpected happens.

Moving Subcontractors

When you find a selected moving company, ask if they use subcontractors. These subcontractors can be the driver of the truck, the people actually moving your items, or even possibly both. Moving subcontractors are not direct employees of the moving company, so they may not abide by the same rules. It’s important to ask your preferred moving company if they use subcontractors before you sign any contract before the big day.

Moving is an exciting and stressful time. Getting your furniture, electronics, and other treasures to your new destination safely and affordably is an extremely important part of that process. When choosing a moving company, consider the different types of services offered before you make a commitment. While brokers can help you save money on moving services, going directly to a moving company is usually the best, safest option. Explore the different services and prices available to you and ask questions before you decide. This will help to ensure that you’ve chosen the perfect moving company who can get your items safely to your new home so you can enjoy living there. Roadway Moving is here to help!
