What To Do If It Started To Rain During Your Move?

Moving, regardless of when and where you’re doing it, can be stressful. You’ll have to juggle your time and energy between different tasks while making sure that you can still accomplish other responsibilities such as being a parent, student, or employee. There are tasks which you should work on months before the actual move and weeks after you arrived in the new location. Obviously, moving is already a very tedious and time-consuming chore, but do you actually know what to do if it started raining during your move?

A lot of factors have to be considered whenever moving. And while most of these are within your capacity, others are uncontrollable – like the weather, for example. Your local TV station might give forecasts on how the weather will be on your moving day, but these aren’t fool-proof. If you want to have a stress-free move even when it’s raining, pay attention to the tips below:

  1. Use sturdy and large boxes: When you’re moving, boxes can be one of your best friends. Not only are these used to store all of your important valuables in one place but these can also protect your valuables from the rain. If you’re planning to transport several clothes, don’t remove them from their hangers, fold them neatly and store all of these in the boxes. Just make sure that you’re allocating enough space for all of your valuables to avoid clothes from being creased.
Aside from the clothes, you can also utilize these boxes to ensure that all of your books and paper items are in good condition once being transported. Smaller items like sticky notes and tapes, can be placed in smaller containers before adding these to the boxes. When using boxes whenever you’re moving don’t forget to label all of these accordingly. Organization is key for a smooth move.
  2. Wrap as many items as you can: The key to moving in the middle of the rain is ensuring that all of your valuables are in mint condition even after the move. You can easily accomplish this goal by wrapping as many items as you can. Opt to use plastic covers which provide shrink wrapping. These don’t consume too much space and protects all of your valuables tightly, lessening the risks of being wet.
  3. Shorten distances: If you already know where the moving company will park on moving day, store all of your valuables in a nearby location. For example, if the moving company will park near your garage, have your moving boxes stored within the area. The lesser time required in traveling from point A to point B, the lesser risks you’ll have in transporting all of your valuables.
  4. Head for cover: Aside from the condition of your valuables, you also have to think about the health and safety of the people who will be assisting you during the move. Paying for expensive medical bills just because someone hurt them themselves from slipping in a wet puddle in your property is the last thing you want to think about.
You can avoid being in this kind of situation by creating covers for the movers. Plan the movers’ route when transporting valuables from your home to their trucks and create makeshift covers for them. You can use popup tents or several hanging tarps in between these routes. You don’t need to break the bank during this process, you just need to make use of items available to you. After all, these covers will be used for a very short time only.
  5. Consider mats, as well: As mentioned, slip and fall accidents can happen when you’re moving in the middle of the rain – everything is basically wet. Along with the covers you’ll be making, take time to make dry mats, too. Spread used cardboards or old rugs in the entryway as these can help maintain everyone’s footing.

It’s Easy When You Know How

Moving can be tough especially if the weather isn’t on your side. Aside from looking for reputable movers who fits the bill, you still have to think about keeping all of your valuables and yourself dry. This still doesn’t include the precautions you and your family will have to take to avoid any slip and fall accidents. Let this article make your life easier. With the right techniques, you can still have a smooth move, even if it’s raining cats and dogs!
